[GUIDE] Restore original ROM on Xiaomi Redmi Note 3

A few days ago the new one arrived Xiaomi Note 3 Redmire, excellent device, fluid and responsive, but I realized immediately that something was wrong: "How many bloatware ..." I told myself, then without too much suspicion I check the ROM version through the "Updater" app, here the result: MIUI 7.9.19 (stable) - No updates available.

Here the problem! The 7.9.19 version does not exist, it is simply the 7.0.19 version (stable) that has been modified by the seller, who has added numerous bloatware to his liking and modified the system in such a way as to prevent updates via OTA Officers!

Let's pause and open a small parenthesis.

As we all now know the Redmi Note 3 is the first Xiaomi smartphone with the Bootloader stuck, this in practical terms means that we can neither root the device nor install custom recovery and consequently custom ROM without Xiaomi's consent (obtainable after twenty days through a rather complicated procedure); here, however, the question arises: if my device has a bootloader blocked, how did the vendor install a custom ROM and complicate my life?  The answer is SP-Flash, a practical tool that doesn't care about the Blocked Bootloader and allows the installation of an original or custom ROM.

Xiaomi, admit it, you made a bullshit by blocking the bootloaders ...

Before starting the guide, I answer the question: Why restore the original ROM on your device? On the web there are many cases like mine and many others quite similar, for example on the official MIUI forum a user has reported that his device mounts a MIUI in version 77.0.19, which obviously is not official and as in my case, does not allow the reception of official updates via OTA; the advice that is given most often is to correct in the file build.prop the information regarding the ROM version to be able to update via "updater", however, to perform this procedure you need root rights which, as we have seen above, are not easy to obtain with the bootloader locked.

Now, without further ado we move on to the guide:

The procedure I'm going to describe will erase ALL the data on your device.

Arm yourself with your Redmi Note 3, USB cable, PC (preferably with 8 windows or above), good internet connection and lots of patience!

The first thing to do is to make sure that our device has most of 60% of remaining charge, done this, we turn it off and put it aside.

From PC we download and install the MediaTek driver which you find here (at the end of the procedure it may be necessary to restart the PC), after which we also download SP-Flash (you can download it from here). Now only the ROM to be installed is missing, or better the Fastboot ROM that we are going to download from here -> Fastboot ROM - Redmi Note 3 - 7.0.22 (stable).

What we are downloading is the China Stable ROM, which is the official version that Xiaomi releases for its devices and contains only two languages: Chinese and English, at the moment the latest version is 7.0.22; I hope you have a good connection because the file weighs well 2 giga! After downloading it we check its extension which should be ".tgz"And if this is not the case we change its extension precisely to".tgz”And extract the file into a folder on the desktop with a compressed archive management program (eg Winrar).

Let's get on with the process, extract and open the SP-Flash folder; inside we will find several files, but what interests us at the moment is the executable "Flash_tool.exe" (which we will have to start as an administrator) and the file "option.bin" that we will have to open to change the language; let's start from this:

  • Open the file "option.bin" (with a writer as Notepad)
  • We look inside it for the string -> [Language]
  • Change the value in "CurrentLang =" from 1 (Chinese) to 0 (English)
  • Save the file, close it and it's done!

Now that we have set the English language on SP-Flash we can safely continue!

  • We right-click the executable "Flash_tool.exe" and start it as an administrator
  • Let's get right into the action by clicking on the "Download Agent"In the screen that appears:

  • We go to the folder where we extracted SP-Flash and open the file named "DA_SWSEC.bin"

Great, we are well under way, if you have followed the instructions well so far you will have a screen similar to this one:

Let's make sure we are on the named card "Download”As in the photo, then we reduce to an icon SP-Flash tool and continue the process:

  • Let's go to the folder where, previously, we extracted the Fastboot ROM, ie the file from 2 jig in format .tgz
  • Open the folder "images"And look for the file named"MT6795_Android_scatter.txt", We select it and copy it to the folder"signed_bin”As in the photo

At this point we reduce the folder screen to an icon and return to SP-Flash tool:

  • Press the button "Scatter-loading"Which is found under the" Download Agent "button, from the window that opens we go to the" signed_bin "folder where we previously copied the" scatter "file

Let's open the scatter file and wait a few seconds for SP-Flash to load the ROM files we're about to install, if we've done everything right we'll find this screen:

Perfect, we have reached the final part of the procedure!

  • Take our Redmi Note 3 and its USB cable
  • We connect the USB cable to the PC (only to the PC)
  • We press the green button "Download”On SP-Flash tool
  • We press and hold the keys Volume - e Power on the phone
  • We connect the USB cable to the phone without releasing the keys

At this point we note that the Progress Bar located at the bottom begins to move! It means the phone has been recognized and the procedure is starting.

IMPORTANT: do not release the keys until the progress bar turns yellow, otherwise you will have to repeat the procedure!

When the flash is over, we will be confirmed that everything has been successful:

Congratulations! You have successfully restored your Xiaomi Redmi Note 3! All you have to do is unplug the USB cable and turn on the device.

PS be patient, the first start after the restoration takes about 5 minutes or little more.
